*Vice President, Advancement* *Purpose:* The Vice President (VP) of University Advancement will have demonstrated senior-level fundraising experience in an advancement team in direct solicitation, prospect management, annual giving, major and planned giving management, alumni and parent relations (if the experience is at a college or university) and comprehensive campaigns.
The VP will have the ability to translate the University's mission into philanthropic partnerships.
The VP will be a strong manager with the proven capability to lead and motivate members of the Advancement team, capitalizing upon their strengths and developing strategies to best utilize their time to advance Biola University’s mission through the generous financial support of alumni, families, foundations, corporations, religious entities and other individuals.
*Qualifications:* *Required Education:* * Bachelor's degree is required.
Master’s degree preferred.
* Additional fundraising certifications desirable *Required Skills (observable and measurable):* * Demonstrated experience building strong relationships with a designated portfolio of donors and a proven track record of reaching or exceeding fundraising goals with these donors.
* Experience working with or aligned with those who work with (as it relates to candidates who have experience in higher education institutions) alumni, parents, corporations and other constituents toward support of the institution.
* Demonstrated ability to translate the organization’s mission into philanthropic partnerships.
* Demonstrated experience collaborating with others in the organization to design and execute initiatives and campaigns to communicate the mission of the organization and increase fundraising opportunities and results.
* Experience in leading multi-channel fundraising campaigns, including participation or leadership in organizing successful events and digital engagement.
* Ability to lead a highly capable team, capitalizing upon its members’ strengths and developing the strategies to maximize their time to advance the organization’s mission through generous financial support.
* Experience in holding team members accountable to reach or exceed their individual and/or team annual or campaign fundraising goals.
* Able to lead efforts of researching for prospective donors and strategizing toward these prospects to become investors in the organization.
* Strong communication and listening skills.
*Required Competencies (broad traits needed to apply to a variety of skills):* * Strong organizational, supervisory, written and oral communication, and leadership capabilities are required.
* Candidates must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a university community.
* Assesses and modifies the division’s budget annually to provide sufficient resources for division operations aligned with goals and objectives, in consideration of the organization’s budget constraints; directs administration of the division’s budget to ensure effective utilization of financial resources and compliance with Federal, State and university policies and procedures; approves disbursement of funds consistent with the division’s budget.
Monitors status of organizational unit’s budget and directs the resolution of deficiencies and/or discrepancies.
* A demonstrated commitment to diversity and multiculturalism as demonstrated on the Advancement Team and in the donor/prospective donor community.
*Required Knowledge/Training/Experience (acquired information and experience):* * A preferred minimum of ten (10) years of experience as a senior level fundraiser in non-profit advancement and/or development with a successful record accomplishment in direct solicitation, prospect management, annual giving, major and planned giving management, alumni/parent relations (if the candidate has been in higher education) and leading capital campaigns.
* Senior level fundraising experience in higher education, in particularly Christian higher education, is strongly preferred.
* Knowledge of trends, issues and accepted practices relevant to the position, including university gift acceptance policies that align with CASE guidelines and reporting standards.
*Job Competencies* * Serves as the university’s chief fundraising officer and meets or exceeds personal production goals for major, annual and planned giving.
* Provides strategic, operational and administrative leadership to advance the mission of the University through the attainment of advancement (development/fundraising) goals and metrics.
* Designs, leads and executes a comprehensive institutional advancement plan for the University that generates contributed income from alumni, families, foundations, corporations and other individuals and organizations and tangibly and meaningfully engages important constituents, influencers and stakeholders.
* Cultivates and stewards positive and sustaining relationships with prospects and donors, alumni and friends, community business and social leaders and others through effective fundraising and through constituent relations activities generating tangible benefit for the University, its students and the community.
* Ensures dynamic processes in all phases of donor qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
* Manages a portfolio of high-capacity donors or donor prospects toward the successful realization of fundraising goals with these prospects.
* Regularly counsels the President on the CEO’s donor portfolio toward strategies that lead to the effective cultivation of these investors.
* Benchmarks performance of peer and aspirational institutions, seeking to achieve industry best practices in key performance indicators.
* Leads and executes the University's comprehensive, diversified fundraising strategies to effectively manage prospect and donor relationships, optimize giving and create sustainable impact to address current fundraising targets and set the groundwork for future comprehensive campaigns.
* Recommends and administers the division’s operational budget.
* Serves on the President’s Cabinet.
* Serves on the Editorial Board of Biola Magazine.
* Serve as the liaison for University Advancement to the Board of Trustees.
* Partners with deans and other academic leaders to understand the full scope of university fundraising needs and establish effective fundraising strategies.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
*Campaign Responsibilities:* The Vice President is responsible for overseeing all strategic and tactical elements of the campaign.
The Vice President will partner with the Campaign Director to develop short-term and long-range campaign strategies within advancement, and across other campus constituencies.
* Partner with the Campaign Director to provide campaign updates to the university Board, leadership cabinet, and the entire advancement staff.
* Play a lead role in the education of all audiences so that they understand that philanthropy is a shared job and that philanthropy is essential for continued outstanding care.
* Establish goals and objectives for campaign volunteer and staff structures, linking these goals with overall Advancement goals and fiscal year planning.
Goals and objectives can be linked to tools, budget, strategy, and metrics.
* Partner with the President and Campaign Director to engage deans, faculty partners in campaign planning and goal attainment.
*Discretion/Independent Judgment:* As the University’s chief fundraiser officer—in partnership with the President and executive leadership colleagues – the VP is the leading strategist, prospect and donor relationship administrator (including identification and qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship) for the University.
In addition to leading a capable fundraising team and other auxiliary departments (stewardship, alumni, parents, research, etc.
), the VP directly supports the President and the Board of Trustees in fundraising activities and supports and coordinates the fundraising activities of University academic and executive leadership.
The VP manages a dynamic portfolio of high net worth individuals and secures major, capital, and planned gifts, as well as advanced annual gifts and endowment support.
The VP is responsible for the development, implementation and execution of strategic, annual and operating plan goals and objectives related to Advancement; the determination of related performance metrics; and the measurement and evaluation of the Advancement team’s performance against those goals.
*Scope of Position:* The advancement function includes responsibility for annual fund, corporate and foundation relations, major gifts and gift planning, endowment, comprehensive and capital campaigns, alumni and parent engagement efforts, stewardship and advancement services.
*Travel & Physical Demands:* * The VP must be willing to travel within the US and internationally in his/her work with donors and as a representative of the University and to manage the high-capacity donor portfolio necessary for the role.
* Moderate to at times extensive work in the field interacting with prospects, donors, key influencers and stakeholders.
* Work is performed in the field and office environment, with some evening and weekend events throughout the year.
*Supervision:* The Vice President for University Advancement reports to the President of the University, and in turn exercises supervision of the associate vice president(s) and directors of the units within the division for University Advancement.
Number of staff supervised is approximately twenty-five.
_This is a full-time, salaried position.
_ Job Type: Full-time Pay: $160,000.
